Messi breaks Ronaldo’s world record after beating France at the World Cup.

After leading Argentina to their third World Cup championship since 1986, Lionel Messi shattered Brazil great Ronaldo’s goal record at big international competitions.

Messi scored a brace in Argentina’s 4-2 penalty shootout victory over France on Sunday, after 120 minutes of football finished 3-3.

Following his brace, Messi has now scored 26 goals for Argentina in major international tournaments (13 World Cup, 13 Copa América).

It is the most for a South American player in any competition, surpassing Ronaldo (25).

In addition, Messi joined Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, and Zinedine Zidane as the only players to have won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and Ballon D’or.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s final saw France star Kylian Mbappe become the second player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final.
